Cover the fireplace in the house. Decorative fireplace finishes are materials that are appropriate to use for such a cladding. How is plastering done

Fireplace in country house has always been popular. It can be real or a fake fireplace.
And that and that view looks quite original. The fireplace creates an extraordinary cozy atmosphere.
But here in construction the question arises: how to decorate the fireplace? Materials for decorating fireplaces are quite diverse, the photo shows examples of such a design in a house.

Today there are great amount materials with which the construction of a fireplace in a country house is carried out. But there are exceptions to the rules and fireplaces can be found in the apartment.
In a private house, a fireplace is built from:

  • Brick.
  • Foam block.
  • Gas block.

These building materials are fireproof and can withstand high temperatures.

Advice. If brick is used in the construction of a fireplace, then it should be red. It keeps warm well and looks more aesthetically pleasing.

Materials used for construction:

  • You can also use white brick. The decorative finish of such a fireplace will be the decorative masonry of such a building material.
    It can be made in different colors. For this, special dyes are added to the concrete solution during the construction of the fireplace.
  • If the fireplace is built from foam blocks or aerated concrete, then such material requires special finishing. They also keep warm well.
    Only when constructing a structure is it worth considering the large size of these building materials. It is for this reason that the fireplace can turn out to be quite large.

  • Do not forget about chimneys from fireplaces, which are decorative in false structures, such a system is simply necessary in real functioning fireplaces. It helps to remove combustion products.
    A chimney is made, as a rule, of brick. There must be a damper on its structure, which ensures a sufficient supply of air masses to the fireplace for a better combustion process.

Fireplace insert

The fireplace insert is a place where the process of burning solid substances (coal or wood) directly takes place.
Decorating a fireplace insert with your own hands can be done:

  • Plasterboard.
  • Brick.
  • Natural stone.

Using drywall:

  • Plasterboard for finishing the fireplace insert is used only in the construction of false fireplaces. But, as a rule, there are exceptions to the rule. Drywall may be needed if it is necessary to level the surface in the firebox.

Advice. For such work, only a certain type of drywall is used - moisture resistant.

  • In the course of the work, it is an honor that the dimensions of the firebox can be reduced. All this for the reason that drywall is attached to metal carcass... It is made on the surface from special profiles.

For the installation of drywall is used:

  • The material itself.
  • Metal profiles.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Screwdriver.

Plasterboard installation:

  • But here some difficulties may arise with the installation of the material. There are hard-to-reach places in the fireplace. It is for this reason that it is worth using a battery-powered screwdriver.

  • Plasterboard finishing of the fireplace insert can be used in the event that it is necessary to significantly reduce the size of the insert. This happens if the fireplace is quite large.
  • When using drywall, it is necessary to initially consider the interior decoration in order to protect the material from the negative effects of fire on it.

To do this, you can use:

  • A natural stone.
  • Decorative rock.
  • Ceramic tiles are rare.

Plasterboard finishing of the fireplace insert will not be difficult. You can carry out the entire process of installing the material and then do the finishing work with your own hands.

Application of bricks

As a rule, a brick is used if the very structure of the fireplace is built from this brick. In this case, the firebox is built together with the entire structure of the fireplace; such a firebox does not require additional finishing.
Also, brick is used when the entire structure of the fireplace is made of a different material that cannot withstand temperature effects or is flammable.
This could be:

  • Wood.
  • Drywall is not fire resistant.

A firebox and a chimney itself are built from it inside the structure. For safety, it is necessary to maintain a certain distance from the brick to the fireplace box.
It should be at least 20-25 cm.

Use of ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles are rarely used for interior decoration of the fireplace insert. As a rule, it is glued to a flat surface.
Most often on drywall. The installation of which is quite simple.
In order to carry out the installation ceramic tiles you must have:

  • Two spatulas.
  • Concrete mortar.
  • Ceramic tile.
  • Cruciform beacons.

Characteristics of ceramic tiles:

  • Ceramic tiles are high quality fire resistant materials. In order to carry out its high-quality installation, concrete mortar or special construction glue is used.
  • In order for the distance between the tiles to be uniform, it is necessary to use cross-shaped beacons, which are inserted between each finishing element.
  • After the installation of the tiles has already been carried out, a special tool is used to mask the seams - decorative putty, which has a large selection of colors. Finding the right option will not be difficult.

External finishing of the fireplace

Since fireplaces can be real or using electrical appliances that mimic a fireplace, the types of finishes can also be varied.
Materials for finishing stoves and fireplaces:

  • Marble.
  • Drywall.
  • Porcelain stoneware.
  • Wood.
  • Glass.
  • Decorative rock(see Facing a fireplace with decorative stone: we do it right).
  • Ceramic tile.
  • Decorative bassoon.

Marble in fireplace decoration:

  • For a fireplace, marble trim will be aesthetically pleasing. This gives the structure a rich look.
    The price for such material is quite high.
  • There is usually a ready-made marble fireplace cladding available. You can order it from specialists of the required size.
    You can assemble it yourself from separate parts. Decorating a fireplace with marble is a rather laborious process and there are some nuances that you need to know.
  • Marble is quite heavy and it is for this reason that it cannot be mounted on a drywall wall. But this rule does not apply to finished marble decorative elements.
  • This finishing material is mounted only on a brick or any other stone surface. For this, a special adhesive is used.
  • agent or concrete solution with additives.

Properties of marble:

  • Flame retardant.
  • Fireproof.
  • Lasting.
  • Long lasting.

At the expense of practicality, some may argue, since the surface of such a finishing material is rather "capricious" and tolerates the effects of abrasive detergents on it. Stains may also appear on it over time, but this is only if the material is not properly processed.
Plasterboard in fireplace decoration:

  • Plasterboard decoration of a fireplace is quite common. Such decoration of electric fireplaces is very popular.
  • A frame is made on the basis of the profiles. Sheets of drywall are already attached to it.
    Then they are plastered and finished.
  • But here it is worth considering the moment that the fireplace insert must also be made with plasterboard.
  • A bassoon is used outside or decorative rock... These materials are very easily mounted on the surface of the material itself using a special glue.

Porcelain stoneware in decoration

This finishing material has been used in the decoration of fireplaces quite recently.
It has excellent technical characteristics:

  • Does not burn.
  • Resistant to high temperatures.
  • Moisture resistant.
  • Practical.
  • Easy to install.

Furnishing a fireplace with porcelain stoneware is quite popular:

  • This finishing material is attached very simply. The surface must be flat.
    For this, drywall or plaster is used.
  • It is mounted on the surface of porcelain stoneware with a special glue. Since the material is decorative, it does not have much weight.
    The video shows an example of using such material.

Wood in the decoration of the fireplace

The tree looks very nice. Fireplace wood trim can be represented by wooden clapboard.
This material is mounted on any surface.
For installation you will need:

  • Wooden boards or bars.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Self-tapping screws for wood.
  • Finishing material.

Wooden lining is used only for outdoor work, as it is very flammable.

Advice. In order for the wooden lining to have a beautiful appearance and the material itself to serve for a long time, it is necessary to varnish its surface.

Glass in fireplace finishing works:

  • Glass in fireplace decoration is rarely used. All this happens for the reason that it can burst under the influence of high temperatures.
    It is for this reason that a special fired thermo-glass is used to decorate the fireplace, which can withstand high temperatures and direct fire.
  • Today, glass decoration of fireplaces can be used for decorative closure of the firebox or for the manufacture of false fireplaces. Such designs look very original and unusual.
    They are able to decorate any interior and add zest to it.

As such, there are no instructions for making fireplaces with glass trim, but you should follow certain rules and consult with a specialist in this field before starting work.

A well-chosen finish of the fireplace helps to preserve its aesthetic qualities for a long time. When choosing the type of installation, consider your capabilities, will you be able to finish the fireplace with your own hands or should you turn to the services of specialists? The most popular types of cladding are tiles, natural minerals and porcelain stoneware.

Due to the wide range of such materials, you can decorate the fireplace in any topic, and by doing it yourself, you will save a significant amount on finishing work and on masonry.

Materials (edit)

Facing operations with fireplaces, as well as with stoves, should be carried out with the help of decorative elements and mortar, which have a splitting coefficient similar to that of bricks. Otherwise, the cladding will quickly begin to crumble. In this regard, experts advise using the following material:

  • terracotta tiles;
  • natural stones;
  • artificial stones;
  • porcelain stoneware.

The finishing method is directly dependent on the material used in the work.

Ceramic tile

Ceramic tiles have properties similar to those of refractory bricks. The similarity in structure makes it possible for the tiles to change sizes when heated, along with the material of the fireplace insert itself. At the same time, the glaze coating protects the tiles from the adverse effects of water and soot.

Ceramic tiles can be of different shapes and sizes. In stores there are products that are created specifically for finishing work with ledges, corners and shelves. The color scheme of terracotta tiles is similar to natural materials. It is easy to lay, so you do not need special tools when working with it. An ordinary grinder is suitable for fitting and cutting elements.

How is tiling done

The process of finishing with ceramic tiles consists of several steps:

  • first, the top layer of the fireplace insert should be cleaned of whitewash, plaster or paint. Then the seams are expanded between the bricks by one centimeter, and dust is removed with a brush;
  • using fire-resistant mastic or a clay solution, the uneven edges must be repaired and dried;
  • if your portal has poor brickwork, and the mortar layer is more than 5 millimeters thick, it is necessary to level the surface of the structure using a grinding machine;
  • then the fireplace should be lit. The bricks should be heated to 30 degrees;
  • a primer is applied to the surface of the bricks. This solution reduces dusting, promotes good adhesion and even drying of the adhesive. As a rule, the primer dries for a couple of hours;

  • finishing work with tiles should start from the bottom. If necessary, you can trim off the protruding parts and grind. If your project contains corner pieces, they should be glued first;
  • the glue is diluted according to the instructions on the box. Use a drill fitted with a hard wire attachment, as it can effectively stir the solution;
  • use a wooden spatula to apply the mortar. After that, a notched trowel should be carried over the surface and firmly pressed on the tile. Glue several tiles at a time to keep the level and plumb line under control. The plastic corner helps to create equal distances between the elements;
  • it takes two days to dry the materials, after which the grouting is done. As a trowel, you can use special means or clay mortar with fine sand and dye;
  • If your tile does not have an auxiliary protective layer, you can apply a fire-resistant varnish to its surface. It facilitates the maintenance of the facing material.

Furnishing the firebox with natural and artificial stones

Stones such as marble and granite have a high price tag. To handle this kind of material, you will need experience with special cutting and grinding tools. Therefore, when finishing on their own, many people buy shell rock, limestone or rubble stones.

photos

Artificial stones are made from Portland cement, natural stone chips and expanded clay. During their creation, vibrocasting and embossing are used, due to which decorative materials have high strength and resistance to moisture. A wide range of materials offered makes it possible to make an exclusive cladding in the fireplace room.

There is no special technology for laying stones. The base is hot melt glue or mastic. If the stones are heavy, then special anchors are used for reliability.

Features of finishing with natural stones:

  1. Initially, it is required to prepare the surface of the stove, which consists in cleaning the stove masonry, opening the seams, removing dust and creating a flat surface.
  2. To create an attractive finish, it is recommended to sort the stones by color. If you want to use multiple tones, dark colors should be laid from below. Any irregularities and unnecessary corners are removed with a grinder.
  3. The fireplace, as well as when working with tiles, should be warmed up to 35 degrees and the brickwork should be treated with a primer.
  4. Dilute the adhesive according to the instructions until smooth. The resulting mixture should be infused for 15 minutes, after which it should be re-mixed.
  5. Masonry using natural stone carried out in the same way as with ceramic tiles. The glue is applied to the stone with a spatula and the element is applied to the wall. Then it must be rubbed tightly. All excess glue should be removed immediately. The joints between the stones should be 2-5 mm.
  6. Before laying the next row, you need to set a tiled corner. After the glue has set, the corners are removed. The rest of the rows are laid out in the same way.
  7. When the glue is dry, fill the joints with mortar. If you want to leave the natural texture of the stone, you should not level the seam.
  8. After you finish the cladding work, the surface is covered with a protective varnish.

Plaster

If you are looking for a quick and inexpensive option for cladding an existing portal, consider plastering. This material is available to everyone and does not require much work. It should be noted that plastering does not contribute to the weighting of the main fireplace masonry, therefore, strengthening of the base is not required.

The main condition for high-quality facing work is a competent choice of plaster. Choose a flame retardant option that contains special fibers. Similar conditions are achieved by adding lime, hemp and straw to the mud.

photos

Decorative qualities are achieved by staining with a compound that is resistant to temperature changes.

How is plastering done:

  • clean the surface from dirt and old plaster;
  • using small nails, fix the reinforcing mesh on the masonry;
  • the prepared solution should be applied with a spatula evenly over the entire surface;
  • after you finish finishing work on your fireplace, leave the surface to dry for two days. After that, you can apply coloring solutions or decorative putty. If necessary, you can add a water-soluble color.

Drywall

With fireproof drywall, you can create unusual fireplace shapes. The workflow itself consists of two stages:

  • the metal frame is being assembled;
  • the resulting frame is sheathed with plasterboard.

Please note that the screws must be screwed in at right angles. This action eliminates the formation of chips on the surface.

Decorating fireplaces allows you to use almost all known materials and coatings, to realize any idea and idea. In order to get a high-quality result, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the instructions, tips and photos located in this article.

Finishing with ceramic tiles

Decorating fireplaces and stoves can be done with ceramic tiles. We need the following tools and materials:

  • Building level and plumb line;
  • Ceramic tiles of the same thickness;
  • Clay solution;
  • Putty knife:
  • Bulgarian;
  • Crosses and pencil;
  • Mesh and adhesive solution.

Finishing instructions:

  1. We prepare the surface and clean it well, eliminating the weight of unevenness and roughness;
  2. We prepare a clay solution;
  3. Apply the clay mixture evenly to the entire surface of the frame;
  4. We lay the construction mesh, which is necessary to create good adhesion of the tile to the surface;
  5. We lay out the tiles and visually collect the picture, pattern;
  6. Thicker tiles should be attached from below;
  7. We prepare the glue solution;
  8. We start laying from the bottom corner;
  9. We apply glue to each element of the product, fix it on the surface and press it tightly for several minutes;
  10. In the necessary places, we cut the tiles with a grinder;
  11. Remove excess mortar with a spatula after partial drying;
  12. After complete drying, we make jointing of the seams;
  13. To add extra shine, you can use a variety of wax-based products.

This option is most often used to decorate decorative installations or structures made from the same material. In order to complete the finishing, we need:

  • Drywall;
  • Self-tapping screws;
  • Corners and fasteners;
  • Building level and marker;
  • Metal profile.

Finishing materials for fireplaces allow you to realize any idea and do it yourself.

Decorating the fireplace insert with your own hands and the portal with plasterboard:

  1. We sheathe the previously prepared metal frame with sheets of drywall, carrying out all the necessary measurements and cutting out the parts by hand;
  2. We fix each sheet with self-tapping screws and check all corners with a building level;
  3. If desired, you can make such additional decorative elements as: columns, shelves, countertops from drywall. To do this, you must first make a metal frame and sheathe it appropriately with plasterboard;
  4. We cover the rear walls with special heat-reflecting materials.

Important: in the manufacture of a volumetric structure, the cladding must be performed in several layers.

At the last stage, it is necessary to well seal all the seams with a special solution, and then apply it in the same way to the entire surface in several layers.

Artificial and natural stone

Decorating a fireplace insert with artificial or natural stone is a rather complicated and painstaking process, for which we need the following materials and tools:

  • The preparatory stage is carried out according to a scheme similar to finishing with tiles;
  • The stone is laid out on the floor and selected by thickness, size and pattern;
  • For fixing, mastic or tile glue is used;
  • Each element must fit snugly to the surface;
  • After drying, the seams are processed, rubbed and filled with a colored solution.

Brick in decoration

For those who do not know how to decorate a wood-burning fireplace, we offer one of the simplest solutions - a brick.

If your fireplace already has standard brickwork, as an additional decor, you can use special varnish-and-paint solutions, which not only make the appearance of the installation well-groomed and stylish, but also reliably protect the material itself from sudden temperature changes and significantly strengthen it, preventing form all kinds of cracks.

Brick joints can be additionally filled with mortar of any color.

Paint and varnish

Decorating fireplace inserts with special fire-resistant paint is one of the simplest options.

Necessary materials:

  • Dye;
  • Brush;
  • Clay solution;
  • Primer;
  • Putty knife.

Finishing:

  1. We prepare the surfaces and apply a layer of putty;
  2. After complete drying, we repeat the mashing;
  3. We apply the clay composition in two layers, so that the previous one is partially dry;
  4. We prime the surface and let it dry completely for 24 hours;
  5. Using a brush, paint in two to four layers.

Additionally, after painting, a special varnish can be applied in order to achieve maximum smoothness and a visually perfect structure.

Using wood

Natural wood can be used as facing material. In order for it to retain its original appearance for a long time, it is necessary to impregnate it with a special antiseptic.

Wooden elements are also fixed to the surface, after which they are covered with various varnishes and other coatings to give the surface a well-groomed appearance and smoothness.

The decoration of fireplaces should be carried out in such a way, due to which, the design of the portal and the firebox should be in complete harmony with the general interior of the living room or any other room.

Facing materials for fireplaces should be selected according to certain rules and principles. First of all, it depends on the "habitat" of your future fireplace, as well as other factors affecting it. How do you know which material for decorating a fireplace is right for you? Let's figure it out!

Several factors influence the choice of facing material for a fireplace. Let's take a closer look at this issue.

  • Before buying, you should immediately decide on the heating material. If it is a tree, then it is enough for the veneer to withstand temperatures up to 900⁰. If solid fuels are to be used, then a material should be selected that will withstand temperatures up to 1200⁰.

Attention: If you plan to heat the fireplace with oak, your cladding must withstand temperatures above 1000⁰. The burning temperature of oak is approaching the burning temperature of coal.

  • We also decide on the installation site. If you have a decorative structure that is placed in a heated room, then, in principle, any material will do. If you install on summer veranda, consider such an indicator as frost resistance. Please read the instructions carefully before purchasing.
  • Also, an important factor is moisture resistance. In an unheated room, this indicator should be at a height. If you do not adhere to this, then after a short period of time the material will begin to flake off and crack.
  • The material for facing the fireplace is selected depending on the weight of the structure. The weight will depend on where you place the fireplace. If you are doing an installation in a private house on the ground floor, then an additional foundation may well help you out. But if you plan to install it on the second floor, then weight is important enough for you. The overlap may simply not withstand too heavy a structure.

Fireplace finishing materials

So, let's take a closer look at various materials for finishing fireplaces and stoves, decide on the possibility of their use, consider the differences in installation. The amount of work will depend on this. Some of these materials can only be installed by a specialist, while others can be fastened completely with your own hands, without resorting to the help of professionals. Then the installation price will be much lower.

Fireplace plaster

This type of finish is probably the most common. Especially now, when the traditional solution has been replaced by decorative plaster... And it is not surprising, because this material has many advantages.

We use plaster in the decoration of the fireplace

  • With this kind of work, you can do it yourself. It is interesting that if you do not apply it correctly, but simply randomly "sprinkle" the solution onto the surface, you will get an original pattern. And if you also try to give it a shape, then you can make a simple masterpiece.
  • Before you start plastering, you need to carefully prepare the base plane. Otherwise, you will not achieve high-quality adhesion of surfaces, and the finish will not last long. Remember to apply a coat of primer, it will improve the adhesion of the material.

Attention: This material is not suitable for finishing the existing structure. Temperature drops have a bad effect on him. As a last resort, it can be used for a fireplace that is heated extremely rarely and not with solid fuel.

Decorating fireplaces with stone

Many people love such a facing material for a fireplace. It has its merits and demerits. But in general, this option can be called the most optimal for any design.

  • First of all, you get a solid and high quality finish that will last quite a long time. Moreover, she is not afraid of a change in weather and high humidity. It can be installed in almost any type of room.
  • A significant drawback is the large weight of the material. We'll have to make an additional foundation.

Attention: When planning finishing with this material, you should take this into account at the initial stage of construction. Make the foundation at least 10 cm wider than the dimensions of the structure. Especially if you will carry out finishing work using not just tiles, but a solid stone.

  • It is better to fix the cladding with the same mortar on which the main masonry was made.
  • If the elements are large in volume and weight, use hooks for fastening, they will support the parts and prevent them from floating in the solution.
  • You can do the work yourself, but be extremely careful about finishing the corners, for this use a plumb line and a square. Do not forget to use a measurer in your work as well. Check each row with a building level.

If you still want to finish with stone, but the weight of the structure or the price of finishing does not allow you to do this, you should not despair, nowadays there is a substitute for this material - an artificial stone.

Attention: When calculating the material, you should immediately take into account additional elements that will facilitate the process of work for you. These are various friezes and angles. Correctly carry out their calculation. Take the number of elements with a margin of at least 15%.

  • This material weighs much less, which means, most likely, you can do without an additional foundation.
  • There are many options different sizes and textures. Even a specialist at first glance will not be able to determine whether this material is natural or artificial.
  • You will get a surface that will not emit odors even when heated. Production is carried out only from environmentally friendly materials.
  • When doing this work, immediately make a high-quality frame and determine the mortar layer. If it is more than two cm, then you will need to align it. It is necessary. Also, don't forget to apply construction mesh, which will increase the strength of the structure.
  • Laying starts at the corner of the bottom row. When working, use plastic crosses, they will help to correctly maintain the angle of the masonry. For a uniform ordering seam, you should use a template, prepare it in advance.

Attention: When doing the work, do not forget to immediately remove the solution that will flow to the front of the parts. And after fastening, immediately clean the seam. This is especially important if you will be finishing the seam with a different color.

  • This material is supported not only by its weight, but also by the ease of processing. It is easy enough to cut, and you can easily make the fit of each element.

Attention: Please read the instructions carefully before purchasing. Not all material of this kind can withstand temperature extremes and high humidity.

The use of tiles as decoration

This type of finish is very popular. In retail, there are many different configurations. You can choose not only in color and shade, but also in texture that imitates different natural materials. The features of the mount include:

Application for finishing the fireplace tile

  • Preparation of a good base plane. The configuration of the placement will depend on this as well.

Attention: When preparing the solution, make it as homogeneous as possible and sift it thoroughly, while taking away debris and small stones. If debris gets under the element, it will not be positioned correctly, the faces will not be in the same plane.

  • Make the correct markup first. To do this, draw the first fastening line, it is along this line that the cladding will be made in the future. When performing it, use a building level that is at least one and a half meters long.
  • Check the installation of each row using a building level.
  • Before starting work, sort the tiles by size, put them in three boxes. Start the masonry with an average one, it will contain the most elements.
  • Never apply mortar without trying on parts dry and making a good fit.

Attention: If you opt for clinker tiles, remember that this material is not attached to ordinary mortar, it absorbs water too much. On the packaging, the manufacturer usually indicates what to use for fastening. If this inscription is not, consult the seller.

Plasterboard fireplace

This material is used for cladding quite often. It serves as a quality base for attaching almost any type of finish.

Note: This finish will not be suitable for existing structures. Although heat resistant sheets are available, they are not designed to be exposed to such high temperatures for long periods of time. Also, do not cover a plasterboard fireplace installed in rooms with high humidity, for example, in a sauna. It accumulates moisture and will soon become unusable.

  • The basis for fixing drywall is a frame made of metal profile or wood. If you chose the second option, then before installation it is worth doing the treatment with antiseptics, they will extend the service life of this material.
  • Make sure that the frame is manufactured correctly. The surface must have a geometrically correct shape. When working, use a plumb bob and a building level.
  • When joining corners, it is best to use a metal corner.
  • Even if you have an electric fireplace, it will be very important to get a reflective screen. Otherwise, when heated, the material will warp over time.

We have presented materials for cladding fireplaces and stoves, which are most often used. Before purchasing one of them, you should view photos and videos on this topic, study the installation parameters. When performing work, it is important to make high-quality markings and take your time.

Video: examples of decorating a fireplace with your own hands

In country houses, fireplaces have always been very popular designs. In any case, any owner thought about building a fireplace in his room. Someone built a real one, someone is limited to a false version - this is already a matter of taste. After all, the days have already passed when, among other things, fireplaces performed an important function of heating the living space.

Each of the options looks great, very original, creates coziness in the room - and in general, a very soulful atmosphere - everyone will agree with that. That is why the decorative finish of the fireplace is an important aspect of the cladding of housing, you can not even argue with this.

What is the best way to decorate a fireplace today, what are the options? There are many materials, they are all diverse. Let's talk about this topic in more detail - and you will definitely find something interesting for yourself.

Materials for the construction of fireplaces

Today you can build a fireplace in a country house using different materials - there are plenty of options. But even in simple urban fireplaces such designs are found - this is quite normal.

So, in a private house for construction use:

  • Gas blocks;
  • Foam blocks;
  • Brick.

Such building materials are good for their fire resistance. They respond well even to very high temperatures - that's why they are chosen.

In a situation where the fireplace is built of bricks, the red material is recommended for use. It perfectly retains heat, looks more beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.

Also, in construction actively use such solutions:

  • If there are no options, you can always use white brick. Decorative finishing the fireplace in this case can also be made with bricks. The master can use bricks of different shades - there is nothing complicated about it. It's just that certain special coloring substances are added to the concrete solution - the result is impressive;
  • When a structure is built from aerated concrete or foam blocks, it's time to think about how to decorate the fireplace, because without special cladding it will not look the best. The materials are excellent, they keep the heat perfectly, but in aesthetic terms, there is something to work on.

Please note: such materials are quite large - so if you make a mistake in the calculations, the fireplace can turn out to be very large. If this moment is critical, calculate everything in advance.
  • The craftsman should also remember that fireplaces usually have a chimney. In case you make a false construction, this element is decorative, so anyone can handle it. But if the fireplace is real, you will not be able to do without a high-quality and working chimney. Removing combustion products is vital;
  • For the construction of the chimney, the same brick is used - this is the easiest way. The design assumes the presence of a damper - so that enough air gets into the fireplace - then the combustion process will be more productive, of high quality
  • Building fireplaces from natural stone is a costly task, but if you have funds, this is an excellent option.

Especially, if you create a real office in a country house, hunter's room or hall.

Features of fireplace inserts (interior decoration)

If you are interested in how you can decorate a fireplace, you should also learn about something else: what is a firebox. By the fireplace, this is the place where solids burn - it can be wood, coal or some other fuel. The decorative finish of the fireplace also includes work with the firebox, but more on that below.

To finish this part of the structure, use today:

  1. Brick;
  2. Drywall sheets;
  3. Natural stone.

Plasterboard cladding

  • You can actually use sheets of drywall to sheathe the fireplace insert (after all, such material is even possible - it is durable). But, only if the work is carried out with a false fireplace. However, exceptions to the rules are also allowed. It may be necessary to use drywall if it is necessary to level the surface in the firebox;
  • Only a special material can be used in works of this level - moisture resistant drywall. It is not recommended to use any other here;
  • In the process of work, it is also worth paying attention - if such material is used, the volume of the firebox can significantly decrease. This is because the sheets are attached to a frame (of course, metal). It is made on the surface from a special profile.

What is used for to execute assembly work :

  • The material is needed directly;
  • Metal profile;
  • Screwdriver and self-tapping screws.

And now in detail about the installation:

  • In the course of work, some difficulties may arise - especially their probability is high when there are places in the fireplace that are difficult to access. That is why it is recommended to work with a screwdriver (a tool that functions with rechargeable batteries);
  • A plasterboard fireplace insert is usually sheathed when the size of the firebox needs to be reduced - to a large extent. This happens when the fireplace is large - and the owner wants to fix the situation;
  • If you decide to use sheets of such material, it is important to think over the interior decoration in advance - so that the material can be protected from the destructive effects of fire and high temperatures.

They will definitely help you with this.:

  • Decorative stone;
  • A natural stone;
  • Ceramic tiles (they are not often used, rather an exception).
When the fireplace insert is lined with plasterboard, difficulties usually do not arise. First, they mount the material, then they begin finishing work (here, too, only their own strength is fully sufficient).

We use brick

Usually brick is used in a situation where the fireplace itself is built from this material. In this situation, the firebox is erected along with the rest of the structure; there is no need for additional decorative finishing.

In addition, a brick is chosen when the entire fireplace structure was made of a different material - which cannot cope with temperature influences in any way (or simply flammable, does not tolerate heat).

Such materials are:

  • Wood;
  • Drywall that is not fire resistant.

A chimney is laid out of bricks, the firebox itself is inside the structure. And in order to ensure maximum safety, it is important to maintain a certain distance from the fireplace box to the facing brick layer. This interval should be at least 200 (or even better - 250) mm.

Facing with ceramic tiles

If the decorative finish of the fireplace is exactly what interests you, you cannot pass by such a wonderful material as ceramic tiles.

In general, it is rarely used for interior decoration of fireboxes, they are attached only to that surface that is flat (usually on drywall, we have already figured out above that its installation is not such a difficult task).

You can easily install ceramic tiles if you have:

  • Concrete mortar;
  • Two spatulas;
  • The finishing material itself;
  • Cross-shaped plastic beacons (needed so that the seam is even).

Features of the use of ceramic tiles:

  • The material is highly fire resistant. To complete the installation efficiently, it is best to use a special construction glue or concrete mortar.
To make it look beautiful, the distance between the tiles must be even. It is for this that it is worth using cruciform beacons - they are installed between the finishing elements. They are not expensive.
  • When the installation work on installing the tiles is completed, the seam is usually masked - for this there is a special decorative putty (it can be of different colors - you can easily find the one you want). In general, nothing complicated - and the result will be great.

Decorative external finishing of fireplaces

Since fireplaces can be both real and exclusively decorative (they work with the help of certain electrical appliances), the finishing options are radically different. Of course, when the fireplace is just an imitation, there is a completely different approach to the facing process.

What kind materials for finishing fireplaces and stoves can be used? Here is a list:

  1. Glass;
  2. Wood;
  3. Marble;
  4. Porcelain stoneware;
  5. Drywall;
  6. Decorative stone;
  7. Ceramic tiles;
  8. Decorative bassoon.

Marble and exterior cladding

  • Decorating a fireplace with marble is an expensive but very beautiful and aesthetic solution. The design will acquire a really solid appearance - a great way for the owner to emphasize his high social position;
  • Today you can buy a completely finished cladding for fireplaces - there is a demand, which means you can easily find an offer. An order according to the required size is also possible with professionals;
  • The master can use the individual parts to assemble the cladding on his own.
Decorating a fireplace with marble is not an easy task. This process is time consuming, in addition, here it is worth remembering many subtleties and trifles.

For example:

  • Marble weighs a lot. Because of this, its installation on the wall is impossible if the surface was previously sheathed with plasterboard. However, this rule does not apply to those decorative elements that are provided to the buyer in a completely finished form;
  • It is customary to install such a natural stone on a brick or some other surface. For this, a concrete solution with various additives is used, or a specialized adhesive.

What properties does marble have? It is possible to note such:

  • Fire safety;
  • Fire resistance;
  • Durability;
  • Strength.

It is also appropriate to add "practicality" here - but many masters will argue about this. The fact is that this finishing material has a very "capricious" surface. It reacts very badly to the effects of certain detergents, which contain abrasive particles.

In addition, stains can appear on the surface of the marble over time - but only when the material has been poorly processed.

Fireplace plasterboard outside

How to decorate a fireplace? Drywall? Quite a good option, especially since it occurs quite often. Especially when electric fireplaces are sheathed.

The whole process looks like that:

  1. First, a frame is made with the help of profiles - drywall sheets are already fastened to it. After these sheets are plastered (this can help), then a fine finish is performed;
  2. But here it is worth considering the following moment: the fireplace insert should also be coated with plasterboard;
  3. A decorative stone or bassoon - these options look great from the outside. Installation of materials is very simple on the surface of the fireplace, especially if you use a specialized adhesive in your work.

Wood cladding, glass application

It's no secret that the tree is famous for its beautiful texture. To decorate a fireplace with such material is quite realistic; lining is perfect for this.

Installation of the material is possible on any surface - there would be a desire.

And for installation you need the following:

  • Screwdriver;
  • Self-tapping screws for wood;
  • Wooden blocks or planks;
  • The finishing material itself, without it anywhere.
Of course, it is permissible to use a lining made of wood only in external finishing works, because this material burns very easily.
  • To make the lining look aesthetically pleasing and the material will serve you as long as possible, it is recommended to apply a special varnish on its surface after the installation is completed.

You can also use glass for cladding. In modern interiors, such material is in great demand..

Details about the use:

  • How can glass be used to decorate a fireplace? This is not so common - it is a fact. The fact is that this material can easily burst due to the high temperature - and in such a situation there is nothing surprising;
  • To prevent such a misfortune from happening, the decorative decoration of the fireplace with glass is made only with a special fired thermo-material that can withstand even exposure to direct fire or high temperatures;
  • Fireplace glass - interesting solution to create an aesthetic element for closing the firebox. Also, with its help interesting imitations of fireplaces are obtained (we are talking about false constructions). Such options look unusual, very original, they will decorate any interior, add zest to your room.

Application of porcelain stoneware

Such a finishing material is relatively recently chosen in order to decorate a fireplace. It is worth noting the following technical properties:

  • Porcelain stoneware does not burn;
  • It tolerates high temperature exposure well;
  • It is recognized as practical, moisture resistant;
  • Installation work is carried out easily, without unnecessary complications.

Thus, facing fireplaces with porcelain stoneware is popular today.

There are reasons for this:

  1. The finishing material is attached very easily, simply. The main thing is that the surface to be treated is even. It is best to level it with plaster, but drywall sheets can also be used;
  2. Porcelain stoneware is mounted on the surface using a special adhesive. Since this material is chosen when decorative finishing of the fireplace is needed, it is made light even at the factory.

conclusions:

As you have already seen, you can decorate the fireplace with different materials, there are plenty of ways here. Watch the video on how professionals cope with such work - they definitely have a lot to learn.

Today, fireplaces mainly perform only a decorative function, equipping them to create coziness, appropriate atmosphere.
